With a big DB’s welcome to our latest addition, we proudly announce the arrival of our new drummer/percussionist, Phil Oliver. Sad as we are to lose our former drummer, Bob Doyle, to his retirement in the woods of New Hampshire we are equally as pleased to have Phil take over our percussion needs. Here is a little on Phil’s background. Do you have one of our recorded CDs in your collection? If not, get one from Marcia during one of our Ballroom events and listen carefully. They were all recorded at Aardvark Sound in Scituate, and it was Phil, the owner and recording engineer in that studio, who gave us both the technical and the musical advice necessary to accomplish the task. Because of his unique background in music, engineering and electronics Phil became our go to person for each CD. If there were technical problems in the studio Phil patiently worked his electronic and computer magic to solve them all. If problems arose with the musical structure of any given piece, such as the utilization of proper chords or notes, Phil’s ear would pick them out even when we didn’t realize that something was a little off base. In fact, so knowledgeable was Phil in all these areas that we started to call him the answer man. More than once we relied on his seeming innate ability to solve any and all the difficulties that arise when attempting a recording project. Phil’s technical background includes such things as both an Associates and Bachelors degree in engineering from Wentworth Institute. In fact Wentworth thought enough of Phil to employ him as an associate professor of electronics where he designed their audio course. His recording studio was actually a spin off from his original graphics company and due to his expertise in both recording and graphics, he has entertained such clients as jazz master Tom MacIntosh, Hubert Laws and George Benson. Even the opera personality Norma Giustiani has done work with Phil at Aardvark Sound.
His talents, however, are not just dedicated to the world of science and engineering. He’s also a dedicated musician and proficient with a number of instruments. Besides percussion, Phil is and accomplished banjo player and has working knowledge of both trumpet and keyboard. He reads music and even conducts The Filedheacht Community Concert Band of the Filedheacht Music School located in E. Bridgewater, where he’s also a valued member of their teaching faculty. Over the years his musical abilities have given him the opportunity to hold long term positions with a number of local groups. Notable acts such as The Luke Wetherfield Show and Brian Almeida and the Rockers (the house band at Brians’s Place in Marshfield for nine years) have made use of Phil’s capabilities. Whether it was banjo with groups such as Woodsmoke and the North River Revue or drums with Luke, Brian and an endless number of country groups, many local artists have worked with Phil both on the live stage as well as in the studio. In a number of cases, Phil, if he wasn’t playing a job, would be hired as a very competent sound engineer. These abilities are the very things that have allowed DB’s Orchestra to have a seamless transition in our percussion change. Bob Doyle, who has also worked with Phil on a number of technical and musical projects over the years, was able to write out various scores in percussion for Phil as well as deal with him on some of the sound and electronic nuances of the band which, in turn, assured the easy transition. It has always been our intent to provide the highest quality level of music possible in our ballroom and concert venues. In that endeavor, we’re confident that we’ve made an excellent choice for our percussion chair and invite all our many friends and dancers to join us in welcoming Phil to the group. And the beat goes on…
